A Dogs Tale Part Two

Wishy is an older dog who still loves to explore his woods. Mostly Beagle, when he finds a scent you'll hear his call as he chases after it....that happy Beagle call...."I've found it!" He's deaf and doesn't care, most older dogs don't, just like most older humans don't care....they feel they've earned the right to not hear you or come when they're called.

Friday was no different than any other day, Wishy's mom let him outside at 10:00 in the morning before she had to run her errands. She let her other two dogs out as well. But Wishy wouldn't come back in when called, nothing new there. I was talking to his mom on the phone at this time and she wasn't worried, just miffed, darned dog.

But when I got a call later that afternoon at 1:00 and he still hadn't come home, I could tell from his moms tone of voice that she was very worried. Scared. So I said I'd be right over.

Now Wishy's home is set way back off the road. He has a nice big yard to explore and a pond and a neighbor across the pond and a very long dirt road. And then there is the woods. Acres and acres of woods. I mean acres. So I put on the boots and with cell phone in hand head out into the woods while his mom took to her car to look.

Thank goodness I had a cell phone because that woods was thick!! I needed Wishy's mom to honk her car horn to help lead me out of there. I was totally turned around but not afraid of being lost because I could hear the traffic from the highway and knew I could just walk out to it, but I didn't want to because of all the damn briars.

Meeting back at her house we decided to split up again, turning around to walk down her driveway there was Wishy headed up it! He came running without a care in the world, running like a young pup. No mud on him. No briars or wet, like me. Where had this dog been for four hours? That question was soon answered by her elderly neighbor from across the pond who drove up the hill after Wishy. She had gone out to her car to help look for him and when she opened up her garage door there he was! Or rather there he went! Wishy, being the nosy Beagle that he is had decided to explore the interior of her garage that morning when she had opened the door to park after returning from her hair appointment. And there he remained until four hours later when she went opened it back up to go looking for him.

Yet another happy ending.
